Breakfast like a King/Queen!
Have you heard the above before? If you have attempted a weight loss program you most likely have. But is there any evidence to support this claim?
Breakfast like a king/queen – lunch like a prince/princess – dinner like a porter/maid.
Well if you ask Triple J’s Dr Karl he will point you to mathematician Ruben Meerman who says the answer is simple. Energy in = energy out! “Just eat less and move more”, simple. Dr Karl and Ruben are right, there is no scientific evidence to support the claim that eating breakfast will help you lose weight. As long as you spend more energy than you consume, you can eat at anytime. OMG, has what I Eat Awesome been recommending all these years been wrong?
If you eat less and move more you will lose weight, but with over 10 years experience working and coaching people towards weight loss goals we can tell you one thing for sure, advising a client to “move more and eat less” doesn’t work! In order to achieve long term weight loss we must change our behaviors and one of the most delicious and best lifestyle behaviours to implement is to have a healthy breakfast 🙂
The Journal of Obesity has over 133 published papers which support eating breakfast for long term weight loss. One study found that people who eat breakfast are 78% more likely to maintain weight losses of 13.5kg or more.
Why? Well a number of reasons have been hypothesized and they all make sense to us:
- The breakfast meal is eaten at home and therefore can be controlled (eg. healthier).
- Eating breakfast gives you the feeling of satiety so you are less likely to indulge in the office morning tea and/or over eat at lunch.
- Breakfast eaters are more likely to engage in physical actively due to higher energy levels.
Conclusion
While it is true that energy in = energy out there is an overwhelming amount of anecdotal evidence which suggests that people who eat breakfast are much more successful at achieving long term weight loss.
We recommend getting up 15min earlier so you have time to prepare and enjoy a healthy breakfast. One of our favourites for a healthy weight is scrambled egg/s with tomato, mushrooms, capsicum, sweet potato, spring onion and baby spinach (for weight loss avoid bread). Served with a little fresh pesto, cracked salt and pepper.
